The Florianopolis Forte Sant´ Ana was erected in 1761 under the guidance of Military Project Engineers José Custódio de Sá and Sargent Faria. Tall and majestic, the Fort sits at the union of the North and South Bays. It was crafted to protect the Town of Our Lady of Desterro, current Florianopolis, and the vessels entering the bays. In its hay day, the fort served as great strategic position in many a battle.
Armed with six cannons pointed out toward the sea, the Florianopolis Forte Sant´ Ana did a lot for the state of Florianopolis. In one famous battle in 1893, she took on heavy fire from the rebel army during the Revolution. Though the situation looked grim, she held strong and eventually emerged victorious.
